$2 Parking Initiative
Oakland Chinatown $2 Parking Initiative
The Alameda County Transportation Commission, Caltrans, City of Oakland Department of Transportation, City of Oakland Elected Officials, Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, and Wellington/CMA announced a partnership to support Oakland Chinatown businesses and visitors by reducing parking rates at the Pacific Renaissance Plaza parking lot.
As part of this collaborative effort, the Alameda County Transportation Commission committed $270,000 to fund a reduced parking program, establishing a $2 flat rate after 4:00 PM Monday through Saturday and after 2:00 PM on Sundays for the next three years. This initiative increases accessibility to indoor parking at a staffed garage in the heart of Oakland Chinatown, and makes it more affordable and convenient for visitors to access Chinatown’s small businesses, restaurants, and cultural destinations.
This initiative comes at a critical time as the neighborhood continues to navigate impacts from the ongoing Oakland Alameda Access Project and other infrastructure improvements which can reduce visitors to Chinatown by disrupting access to the neighborhood. By lowering parking costs during key hours, partners aim to encourage increased foot traffic and provide tangible support to local merchants navigating these challenges.
The partnership reflects a coordinated effort between public agencies, private property ownership, and community leadership to respond to the needs of Oakland Chinatown. In addition to supporting businesses, the reduced rates aim to improve the visitor experience and reinforce Chinatown as a welcoming and accessible destination.
Community members and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the new parking rates and continue supporting Oakland Chinatown’s vibrant small business community.
