A Chinese Tradition
Spring Banquet is the Chinese tradition of gathering with friends and family for a multi-course dinner to welcome in the New Year. While the Oakland Chinatown Spring Banquet is held a couple of months after the lunar new year, it retains the same spirit.
The annual Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce Spring Banquet is held every April at one of Oakland Chinatown's premier restaurants, and draws over 300 people each year. It is one of the Chamber of Commerce's main fundraising events. This gala event introduces the OCCC's new Board of Directors. The festivities usually include keynote speeches, awards and special recognition of organizations, community leaders, and members for civic contributions.
The event attracts a diverse crowd, which usually includes a smattering of local politicians, members of other Chambers, local business people, and corporate sponsors. The event offers a tremendous opportunity for networking.
Guests and Chamber members are treated to an open bar and multi-course Chinese banquet dinner. All who attend are treated to a feast fit for royalty. The festivities also include a silent auction and the premier of the new Oakland Chinatown StreetFest logo and T-Shirt.
OCCC partners with City of Oakland and hosts seminars and workshops in Chinatown to help our members and Chinatown business owners to develop their business. Most of the seminars and workshops OCCC planned are bilingual (English and Cantonese/Mandarin).
About the 2019 OCCC Chinatown StreetFest
On August 24 & 25 the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce (OCCC) will be presenting its 32nd Annual Chinatown StreetFest. In celebrating the Year of the Boar, the Chinatown StreetFest will attract thousands of people from all over the Bay Area to come savor the taste of Asia, and to experience the traditions that Oakland's Chinatown has so diligently preserved.
The two-day event runs from 10AM to 5:30PM and is free to the public. Consisting of more than 150 booths, the festival will span 8 blocks of Chinatown. Every year small businesses and community organizations from all over California come to showcase a myriad of delicious foods, unique Asian products, and special services. There will be arts & crafts, live music, cultural entertainment, and attractions for families and children.
Established in 1988 by the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, the StreetFest was created to encourage a sense of community in a place where diversity in people and businesses thrive. Browsing the 8 city blocks one will find a little bit of almost everything the Bay Area has to offer. Of course, there will be a big slice of Chinatown, offering everything from jade bracelets to BBQ lamb, an array of Asian restaurants , a variety of Boba shops and hand-crafted ceramics. At the food court, one can find everything from Thai barbeque, tasty tacos, Italian Ice to kettle corn to exotic fruit drinks.
The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce holds a number of after work business networking mixers throughout the year. These gatherings allow members and guests an opportunity to meet new people, socialize, make some new business contacts, and keep abreast of local news in a relaxed atmosphere.
Chamber mixers are free for members and guests and offer complimentary hors d'oeuvres, refreshments, door prizes and an open bar. Mixers are usually hosted by a local merchant or business office in Chinatown or the surrounding area. The host is given the opportunity to address attendees and provide them with a brief overview of their products and services. It is a great public relations opportunity for a hosting company.
Sometimes mixers are done in conjunction with other Chambers to generate greater diversity in the crowd and create a greater opportunity to meet new people.
A schedule of OCCC mixers will be announced on this web site or can be found in OCCC social media.
The Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce holds several seminars and workshops a year. Presented in or around the Chinatown area, the Chamber's seminars and workshops are always free, and offer a great way to reach local Chinatown merchants or anyone that may have an interest in doing business in Oakland Chinatown. To accommodate local merchants, Chamber seminars are often bilingual and sometimes entirely in Chinese. Topics may cover a wide range of subjects, such as how to start a small business, or information on government services and programs available to local merchants and minority business owners, or changes to Oakland Chinatown and the surrounding area that may affect the Oakland Chinatown's business climate. The Chamber often partners with other organizations on a seminar.
Beautify Oakland Chinatown is an Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce project to promote the beautification and cleanliness of Oakland Chinatown. Each year, Chamber organizes the Beautify Oakland events in conjunction with local youth groups where a group of volunteers sweep the streets of Oakland Chinatown. The Chamber also periodically arranges for the city of Oakland to steam clean the streets of Oakland Chinatown when the need arises. To encourage the merchants and business owners' continued commitment to keeping Oakland Chinatown clean, the Beautify Oakland Committee awards and recognizes merchants that have been judged by the Chamber as having the cleanest and neatest premises in their respective categories. You can recognize the winners by walking into their place of business and finding the Chamber's "Beautify Oakland Chinatown Everyday" plaque on display.
Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce is one of the most important organizations in Chinatown that works with local governments as City of Oakland and Alameda County, and public agencies as AC Transit, Cal Trans, and so on to bring the new programs, policies, safety issues into the community and bridge the communications.
